Executive Summary
Launched in 2017, School Leader Lab (SLL) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop inspiring leaders who disrupt racism and champion rigorous learning. Our vision is a school system steered by leaders who inspire students to grow and teachers to thrive. SLL provides transformative, professional development through cohorts, 1:1 coaching, and tailored technical assistance projects with schools.
The higher up in the level of leadership at schools, the less likely leaders look like the kids they serve. Though students of color make up over 50% of public-school classrooms, only 6% of school superintendents are not white. Why is this? Leaders of color face discrimination that makes it harder to reach the top levels of influence in their organizations. They are less likely to receive the development they need to succeed while simultaneously experiencing higher levels of scrutiny. This all leads to a high level of burnout amongst leaders of color. School Leader Lab is changing that reality by providing the development opportunities leaders need, while creating a safe space to advance their careers.
We support network-level leaders, principals, assistant principals, and teacher leaders in DC schools, 75% of whom identify as BIPOC. We ensure that more black and brown students see themselves reflected in their leaders. SLL’s staff, 80% of whom identify as people of color, are skilled educators with decades of experience in the public school system, and a dedication to ensuring equitable outcomes for students.
