Executive Summary
The mission of Familias en Acción (Familias) is to strengthen the health and well-being of Latino families and communities in Oregon. Our Promise is to be Present, to Engage, and to be Relentless in the pursuit of health equity. Our staff and board have personally experienced barriers that exist for Latino/a/es in the United States, many of them being first-generation U.S. residents and citizens, and 83% of our staff identify as members of the Latino/a/e communities we serve.
Familias provides healthcare and resource navigation, health education and health promotion, and workforce development support to Promotores de Salud/Community Health Workers (CHWs). All of our services are culturally specific and offered in Spanish through staff who are bilingual in Spanish and English. Our CHWs serve Latino/a/e individuals and families by removing barriers to care, addressing systemic racism, and facilitating the navigation of complex health systems.
Since our inception, Familias has played a critical role in creating economic, educational, and leadership opportunities for Latino/a/e community members and CHWs in Oregon. Our organization has developed five culturally specific health curricula: food equity, palliative care, cancer education, HIV/STI and sexual health education, and a state-approved Community Health Worker Certification program in Spanish. Through our health education curricula and train-the-trainer programs, CHWs and community members are able to acquire skills to engage Latino/a/e populations in adopting healthier behaviors, managing chronic conditions, advocating and accessing resources; navigating health systems; and addressing physical, mental, and emotional health needs.
