Executive Summary

With a mission of guiding immigrants and refugees in their journey toward self-determination and social equality, CAPI annually serves 12,000+ lower-income persons of color residing in Minnesota’s Twin Cities region. Founded in 1982 to support the resettlement of Southeast Asian refugees of the Vietnam War, the Center for Asians and Pacific Islanders’ name was changed to CAPI (pronounced ‘cap-ee’) in 2008 to be more inclusive of all refugees, immigrants, and BIPOC-identifying persons. For more than 40 years, CAPI has been providing immigrant-led community-based services in partnership with the diverse immigrant and refugee communities that now call the Minneapolis area home.

CAPI’s theory of change seeks to ultimately advance the social, economic and political status of immigrants and refugees via three integrated units: (1) *Basic Needs* programming provides direct/tangible resources, assists people to secure public benefits, and connects participants to longer-term CAPI services; (2) *Economic Empowerment* programming is designed to increase participant’s income and wealth via employment services, career training, financial wellness and homeownership services; and (3) *Civic Engagement/Public Policy* programming elevates the voices of immigrant populations, connects people to the community and seeks systemic changes to public policy.

CAPI reflects the communities we serve at all levels of the organization and is at a pivotal stage where Yield support could be highly impactful to the communities we serve. Our strategic plan calls for the scaling of our financial wellness, homeownership, and business/ nonprofit incubation services via the planned expansion of our headquarters and future co-location with multiple BIPOC-led community partners.
