Executive Summary
Founded in 1990, BwCF was the catalyst for a movement that changed the landscape of public education and has proven that success is not limited by a child’s zip-code. BwCF provides targeted services, including curriculum development, research, evaluation, and fiscal and operations management, to a small network of public schools that are working to level the educational playing field. BwCF serves New York City children from historically underserved neighborhoods along a continuum from pre-K to and through college, creating a pathway to higher education, self-sufficiency, and community leadership.
In 2003, BwCF established its flagship program, the Legacy Network, to prepare students from our network charter schools and from district, non-affiliated charter, and parochial schools in the broader community to successfully navigate the transition from middle school to high school, high school to college, and college to career. The Legacy Network’s free after school and summer programs offer tutoring, college admissions advising, standardized test preparation, financial aid and scholarship support, paid internships, and community fellowship opportunities, along with support throughout students’ academic and professional postsecondary experiences.
BwCF programs equip students with the skills and confidence needed to address the social and economic issues plaguing their communities. Students are empowered to graduate from high school and college with an extensive array of professional experiences and then return to their communities as successfully employed young adults to create generational change for their families and their neighborhoods. By transforming educational and career outcomes for children, BwCF seeks to break the enduring cycle of poverty.
